What is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS)
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) is a government initiative to support property owners in England and Wales for replacing fossil fuel heating systems with low-carbon alternatives like heat pumps and biomass boilers. The scheme is available in urban as well as rural properties that are currently using fossil-fuel or inefficient electric heating systems.
Once Ofgem approves the grant, the MCS-certified installer deducts that amount from the upfront cost. For example if the agreed quote with the installer is £10,000 to replace a gas boiler with an air source heat pump, the homeowner or private landlord will need to pay £2,500 (i.e. 10,000 – £7,500). The BUS scheme is aimed at minimising reliance on fossil-fuel heating and supporting the net-zero emission target by 2050.

BUS Scheme Covers
The government boiler upgrade scheme works through the MCS-certified installer, who identifies the retrofit heating upgrade requirement after your property assessment. Based on that, the grant may cover:
- Air-to-water Heat Pump
- Replace the existing fossil fuel heating system
- Radiators (each will charge at £100 for up to 8)
- Smart heating control
- Hot water cylinder, if the existing one does not meet the standard
- Expansion vessels if the existing one not meet the standard
- Note: The scheme also covers £5,000 off the cost of installing a biomass boiler, £7,500 off the cost of installing a ground source heat pump, and £2,500 off the cost of installing anair-to-air heat pump or heat battery, but we do not offer these installations. We only cover the air-to-water heat pump with a £7,500 voucher.

What is the 30 minute heating rule?
It means you should turn the heating on around 30 minutes earlier when you need it, and turn it off the same 30 minutes earlier when you stop needing it.
